What Is Gowri Nalla Neram? – Why Is It Believed That Actions Started During This Time Bring Good Results?

“If you begin something at an auspicious time, it is believed that the work will progress well.”

Why did our ancestors place so much importance on choosing the right time?

  • A new beginning…
  • An important journey…
  • Starting a business…
  • Taking the first step toward something meaningful…

Before beginning such activities, many traditional families would first look at Gowri Nalla Neram, an auspicious time mentioned in the Gowri Panchangam.

But what lies behind this concept? Is it simply about choosing a particular time on the clock? Or is it about aligning our actions with the traditional understanding of the natural flow of time?

This is what makes Gowri Nalla Neram an interesting part of our spiritual and traditional practices.

What Is Gowri Nalla Neram?

Gowri Panchangam is a traditional Tamil system of timekeeping in which the daytime and nighttime are divided into specific equal sections, with each period traditionally associated with a particular quality.

Generally, the daytime and nighttime are each divided into eight sections. Among these periods, some are traditionally considered auspicious, while others are considered less suitable for beginning important activities.

The Favourable & Unfavourable Periods

Quality CategoryGowri PeriodsTraditional Perception
Favourable PeriodsAmirtham, Dhanam, Uthi, Labham, SugamRegarded as auspicious for new beginnings
Periods to AvoidRogam, Soram, VishamGenerally considered unsuitable for auspicious starts

Therefore, Gowri Nalla Neram does not simply refer to a particular time. It represents the traditional belief that important or auspicious activities should be started during a favourable period.

Why Is It Believed That Important Activities Should Begin During an Auspicious Time?

According to traditional systems of timekeeping, each period of the day was believed to have its own particular quality. Because of this, beginning a new activity during an auspicious period was traditionally believed to provide the effort with a positive beginning, favourable energy, and a good intention.

How an activity ends is important. But… How it begins is equally important.

That is why Gowri Nalla Neram can be understood as more than simply “checking the time.” It represents a traditional way of choosing an auspicious beginning for an important activity.

“If You Start at an Auspicious Time, It Will Go Well” – Why Is This Believed?

Traditional astrological beliefs suggest that beginning an activity during a favourable time can create supportive circumstances for that effort. Choosing an auspicious time is especially common for new beginnings, important activities, and significant occasions.

The belief behind this is simple and meaningful:

If the first step is taken well, the steps that follow may also move in a positive direction.

So, when a new activity is started during Gowri Nalla Neram, it is traditionally approached with the belief: “May this activity be completed successfully.”

That positive belief itself can become a meaningful way to begin the journey.

How Is Gowri Nalla Neram Calculated?

Gowri Nalla Neram is not simply determined by looking at a fixed time on the clock.

  1. Sunrise & Sunset Reference: First, the sunrise and sunset times of the particular location are taken into consideration.
  2. Division of Time: The daytime is divided into eight equal parts, and the nighttime is also divided into eight equal parts.
  3. Sequential Assignment: Then, based on the day of the week, the traditional Gowri sequence is used to assign a particular Gowri period to each section.

Therefore, the same Gowri period does not necessarily occur at the exact same clock time every day. Also, because sunrise and sunset vary depending on the location and season, the corresponding Gowri periods can vary as well. This is one of the interesting aspects of this traditional timekeeping system.

Amirtham – Even the Name Carries a Meaning!

Among the Gowri periods, Amirtham is traditionally considered a highly auspicious period. The word itself creates a beautiful spiritual impression.

According to traditional Panchangam practices, activities begun during this period are believed to have favourable results. Because of this, some people specifically choose Amirtham time for beginning important activities.

  • The belief that the time is auspicious…
  • The feeling that the mind is filled with confidence…

When these two come together, they can create a meaningful new beginning.

Dhanam, Labham, Sugam – Even the Names Carry a Message!

The Gowri periods also include names such as Dhanam, Labham, Sugam, and Uthi. These names themselves reflect the qualities traditionally associated with the respective periods:

  • Dhanam – Prosperity
  • Labham – Gain and progress
  • Sugam – Well-being and comfort
  • Uthi – A period traditionally associated with progress and favourable action

These meanings can be understood from a traditional spiritual perspective. Therefore, choosing an auspicious time is not merely about “checking the clock.” It is also about beginning an activity with positive thoughts, good intentions, and hopeful expectations.

Auspicious Time – The First Step of Faith

Choosing an auspicious time alone cannot guarantee the outcome of any activity. However, according to traditional beliefs, beginning something during a favourable period can provide a positive start and create a sense of confidence in the mind.

$$\text{Auspicious Time} + \text{Positive Thoughts} + \text{Sincere Effort} + \text{Faith in the Divine} = \text{Spiritual Foundation}$$

When these come together, they can create a meaningful spiritual foundation for a new beginning.

What Can You Think About When Starting Something During an Auspicious Time?

Before beginning an important activity, you can take a moment to calm your mind and remember the Divine. You may offer a simple prayer such as:

“Divine Lord,

Please bless this effort and allow it to progress well.

Guide me toward the right path.

May this good activity that I am beginning bring a positive outcome.”

Beginning with such a prayer can make the moment feel even more meaningful. Because…

  • Auspicious time helps us choose the beginning of an activity.
  • A positive mind helps shape the path of that activity.

Finally…

Gowri Nalla Neram is not merely a traditional system of timekeeping. It can also be seen as a beautiful reminder:

  • Do not begin everything in haste.
  • Choose the right time.
  • Begin with positive thoughts.
  • Take your first step while remembering the Divine.

That is why our ancestors emphasized the importance of beginning important activities at an auspicious time. According to traditional belief, a good activity started during an auspicious Gowri period is believed to progress favourably and move toward a positive outcome.

  • Let the time be auspicious…
  • Let the thoughts be positive…
  • Let the effort be sincere…
  • And let Divine grace be with you.

Then… The first step taken at an auspicious time may become more than just a good beginning… It may become the beginning of a beautiful journey.
